Librarian recognized for 33 years of service

Librarian Marlene Copeland was recognized for her 33 years of service to the Vanceboro-Craven County library. Ms. Copeland witnessed the growth of the library from a one room setting into the newly renovated and expanded facility. She also was instrumental in leading the library into the 21st century with the newly adopted electronic catalog system. Over the years Ms. Copeland was always present, exemplifying the utmost dedication to the library and its patrons.

The Craven County Board of Commissioners expressed their gratitude to Ms. Marlene Copeland for her years of providing these vital services and wished her well in her retirement.

Big Changes Ahead

Regional Library Receives Grant for System Change

Temporary Closures Listed

Craven-Pamlico-Carteret Regional Library (CPCRL) has received a grant of $100,000 to migrate to “Library.Solution”, a public library automation system for managing collections, circulation, patron account information, and reporting. Last year CPCRL had 335,491 items in the collection, including books, compact disks, MP3s, DVDs, videos, and other non-print materials; checked out 494,926 items; and had 78,778 active patrons of all ages.

The grant is provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) as administered by the State Library of North Carolina, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.

“Half of all public libraries in North Carolina use Library.Solution and all are pleased with the company and the software,” comments Susan W. Simpson, CPCRL’s Director. “We think our patrons will enjoy the new catalog, especially the Kid’s Catalog.” Patrons will find new self-service options on their My Account page including paying fines online with a credit or debit card, updating account information, and sharing reading lists or saved searches with friends. “Library.Solution” is a product of The Library Corporation, based in Inwood, West Virginia.

The Library adopted its current automation system in November 2009.

The migration will involve closures at the 10 affiliated libraries:

  • Friday, September 30- Last day to check out materials on the current system.
  • Saturday, October 1- All the libraries open regular hours but without a system for checking materials in or out, issuing new library cards, or reviewing patron accounts. Public Internet access will be available.
  • Sunday, October 2 through Sunday, October 9- All libraries closed for staff training.
  • Monday, October 10- All libraries open their regular hours with “Library.Solution” software in place.

Outdoor book and media returns will be available during this time.

CPCRL includes: Bogue Banks Public Library (Pine Knoll Shores), Carteret County Public Library (Beaufort), Cove City-Craven County Public Library, Down East Public Library (Otway), Havelock-Craven County Public Library, New Bern-Craven County Public Library, Newport Public Library, Pamlico County Library, Vanceboro-Craven County Public Library, and Western Carteret Public Library (Cape Carteret).
